Overview of Experience
Before starting
her private
practice in 1984 specialising in Eating and Trauma issues, Judy had a large range of work experiences.
This included being
co-director of a Women's Health Center, Assistant Director for a Displaced
Homemakers Program, Conflict Resolution trainer for students, staff and teachers
in several New York City schools,
and a counsellor for people with disabilities. She has worked with families
in the public schools, preschools, and a Head Start program. She has done
abortion counselling, psychiatric counselling, and job counselling, and has led assertiveness
training workshops, groups for women with compulsive eating problems, and
body image and empowerment workshops for women.
Currently she maintains a private practice in West Auckland, New Zealand,
is on faculty and develops curriculum/leads workshops for the The PSI Institute
and the Human Development and Training
Institutes in Auckland, as well as for the EMDR International Association, and
EMDR Association of Australia. She recently
co-authored a chapter in Robin Shapiro's book
EMDR Solutions II (2009) entitled
The
Case of Mistaken Identity: Ego States and Eating Disorders,
and received her PhD in 2006 with a published dissertation on the
Role of
Dissociated Love and Trauma in Human Violence and Evil. She trained and
became certified in EMDR in 1993 with Francine Shapiro, and took 5 years
of post graduate training at the Women's Therapy Centre Institute (founded
by Susie Orbach) in working with eating and body image problems. Later she published an
article in the International Journal of Trauma and Dissociation on
Dissociation and Compulsive Eating.
She received a Masters degree in Family Therapy from California State University
Hayward in 1992, and an MA in Counselling from New York University in 1981.
