Psycho-somatic dissociation (e.g. eating, sleeping, dissociative, and
somatic presentations) requires extensive somatic and ego state interweaves
to ensure EMDR effectiveness and safety. In this course, you will learn:

symptom trance”

Eating problems usually involve varying degrees of dissociation - most
especially somatoform dissociation of sensations of hunger, fullness, and
proprioceptive awareness of body size. At present there are no highly effective
systematic approaches for assessing or intervening with the many clients with
intractable compulsive eating, restricting, or purging symptoms. Instead we are
told that eating disorders are hard to impossible to treat and we should lower
our expectations for outcomes. Yet the correlation between compulsive eating
patterns and dissociation has been noted by many, however as yet there are no
explanations for the reasons for this correlation, nor structured interventions
with clients who may initially present with no trauma history. Through a
synthesis of anecdotal data, experiential exercises, theoretical formulations,
and a review of the research on traumatic memory and attachment deficits, this
course will cover the continuum of complex trauma and dissociation, including
training in offering psycho-education to your clients about how to identify and
intervene into the binge/starve and/or binge/diet or purge cycles.
The method taught is symptom-focused, yet psychodynamic in orientation, allowing
the therapist to understand and use the symptoms as metaphors for other
psychological issues, while still respecting the deep pain of eating and body
image obsessions.

Judy has been offering psychotherapy, training, and
supervision for the past 26 years. She has a Ph.D. with a specialism
in Trauma Psychology and two Masters degrees, Counselling and
Marriage and Family Therapy. In her Auckland New Zealand and online
supervision and consulting practice, she specialises in training
therapists to work with abuse survivors and with people with eating
problems. She is a NZ Registered Psychologist #90-03237, a
Certified EMDR Provider of Continuing Education, and a California
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #MFC32570 (currently inactive
in California). Post graduate
studies included EMDR from Francine Shapiro (founder of EMDR),
Feminist Relational Therapy for Eating Problems with Susie Orbach
(author of Fat is a Feminist Issue and Hunger Strike) and others at
the Women's Therapy Centre Institute in New York City; and Somatic
therapy from Pat Ogden (founder of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy). She
has just published a chapter in the book EMDR Solutions II on
integrating EMDR, Somatic and Ego State Therapy approaches in the
healing eating problems, and has published an article on Compulsive
Eating and Dissociation in the International Journal of Trauma and
